Why Most Dog Subscription Boxes Are Secretly Bad for the Planet - The Fetching Box - Consciously curated monthly boxes, for dogs

Why Most Dog Subscription Boxes Are Secretly Bad for the Planet

Posted by Samuelle kredl on

Opening a dog subscription box may spark some guilt. Plastic bags, synthetic toys, and foam padding pile up on the floor. You're not alone in this feeling.

The pet industry, more specifically within dog subscription box industry, has a waste problem. A big one. And most brands aren't really concerned about it. Which bothers us. Big time. It's where the idea of an eco-friendly dog subscription box made in Canada stemmed from.

What's Actually Inside Most Dog Subscription Boxes

Walk through the average dog subscription box and here's what you'll typically find:

  - Two treat bags sealed in plastic pouches, often with an excessive ingredient list

  - One or two plush toys made from synthetic materials, manufactured in China

  - Plastic packaging throughout

It looks fun. It photographs well. And it arrives at your door feeling like a celebration. But let's look at what happens next.

The plastic treat bags go in the garbage. The toys, although cute and colourful but far from durable, last a few days (maybe even only a few minutes) before the stuffing is sprawled across the floor. The synthetic filler and microplastics are either ingested during the destructive chewing (yep, you heard that right, straight in your dog's tummy) and/or make it to the recycling bin where, more often than not, it ends up in landfill anyway.

Multiply that by 12 months. Multiply that by thousands of subscribers. That's a lot of plastic for a product that claims to be about love.

Why Packaging Is the Issue Nobody Talks About

The treat is only part of the story. The packaging is the other half.  And it's where most subscription boxes fall completely flat.

Standard plastic treat bags are not recyclable in most Canadian municipalities. They end up in landfill. Mylar pouches - those shiny, crinkly bags - are almost never recyclable.

For a dog owner in Vancouver, Toronto, or Montreal who is already making conscious choices about their own consumption, receiving a box full of single-use plastic every month feels increasingly out of step with their values.

What Eco-Friendly Actually Looks Like in a Dog Box

We'll be direct here: at The Fetching Box, we rebuilt the entire concept of what a monthly dog box should be in 2026, starting with the question of what we were willing to put out in the world.

Every element of our packaging was chosen with end-of-life in mind:

  - Our box is fully compostable - it breaks down naturally.

  - Our treat bags are certified compostable - not just "recyclable where facilities exist," actually compostable

  - Our poop rolls are compostable - because the last thing the planet needs is a plastic bag inside another plastic bag

  - Our box filler is crinkle paper - not foam, not plastic air pillows, just paper that can go straight into your blue bin

  - Our toys are made from natural fibres - leather, jute, wool-felt are all materials that are not harmful for the planet or your dog

  - Our treats are made with sustainable meat alternatives or no meat at all - no beef, no pork, no chicken. Not only because of allergies but because they leave a heavy impact on the planet. We opted for rabbit, venison, and other game meat from small local farms.

This isn't greenwashing. These are deliberate material choices that cost more, require more sourcing work, and demand more from our artisan partners. We made them anyway because we believe the dog industry can do better.

  The Toy Problem

Dog toys are one of the dirtiest secrets in the pet industry.

Most plush toys sold in subscription boxes are made from polyester fleece and synthetic stuffing — plastic, essentially, in fluffy form. When dogs destroy them (and they will), those synthetic fibres don't disappear. They shed into your home, into waterways, and eventually into ecosystems.

The "tough toy" category isn't much better. Many are made from synthetic rubber compounds that don't biodegrade and can cause issues if ingested.

We searched for a better answer and found it - not in a factory, but in a small workshop that shares our obsession with doing things properly. Their toys are made from natural fibres including felt and suede making them biodegradable and genuinely tough. It took seven labradors two and a half weeks to get through one compressed felt toy collectively. And when they eventually reach the end of their life (because every toy will eventually lose against your dog), they don't leave a permanent mark on the planet.

And we will be fully transparent, our toys come from an amazing company in England. Their passion for creating durable natural toys and their strong eco-responsible values aligned so seamlessly with our own, we are proud to be partnering with them, even if they aren't Canadian.

That's the standard we hold ourselves to. And it's the standard we think every dog brand should be held to.

Supporting the People Behind the Products

There's another dimension to this that often gets overlooked: who made it, and what does buying it do for them?

When you subscribe to a mass-market dog box, your money moves through a large company, pays for their logistics and marketing, and trickles down to overseas manufacturers at the bottom of a very long supply chain.

When you support a box built around Canadian artisans, something different happens.

Your money goes to a small-batch baker in BC who makes every treat by hand. It goes to a maker in Squamish creating functional mushroom supplements for dogs the same way they'd craft them for people. It supports a family business that has built something genuinely special and needs customers who understand the difference between a handmade product and a factory product.

The Fetching Box exists to be that bridge - between the dog owner who cares deeply about quality and values, and the Canadian makers who are producing some of the most thoughtful pet products in the country.

What to Look for in an Eco-Friendly Dog Subscription Box

If you're evaluating your options as a Canadian dog owner, here are the questions we'd encourage you to ask any brand:

  On packaging:

  - Are your treat bags certified compostable or recyclable?

   - What is your box filler made of?

  - Is your shipping box recyclable or compostable?

  On products:

  - Where are your products manufactured?

  - Are your toys made from natural or synthetic materials?

  - Can you name the specific makers behind your products?

  On ingredients:

  - What proteins do you use and why?

  - Are your treats made in small batches or manufactured at scale?

  - Are they free from common allergens?

If a brand can't answer these questions clearly and specifically, that's information too.

  The Dog Owner Canada Deserves

Canadian dog owners - especially in cities like Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal - are among the most values-driven pet owners in the world. They read labels. They ask questions. They care about where things come from.

The dog subscription box industry hasn't caught up to that.

We're trying to be at the forefront of the change - one thoughtfully packed box at a time.

If you've been looking for a dog box that matches the way you already try to live, we'd love to introduce you to what we've built.
